CREATIVE TYPOGRAPHY

Contrasting Face
  • Contrasting faces can be as simple as contrasting the style of an italic version of a serif face with the Roman version of the same face.

  • Contrasting type is an effective way to use type creatively.

Vary weight of typeface
  • Weight on typefaces can be determined by studying the degree of the structure thickness.

  • Varying the weights of type creates different tones of gray and black on the page.

  • Using very thin stroke on the typeface gives an open, light airy feel to the page.

  • The weight can be use to call attention to some information or important issues.

Reversal of characters
  • Reversal types are typefaces that are printed white on a black or coloured background.

  • It is usually preferable to reverse a thick-weight font, such as Sans Serif, rather than a serif font, which has a certain degree of thickness in its strokes. This is because when you reverse, the thin areas can be easily filled in with ink.

  • It is also not advisable to reverse script of tiny type under 6 points due to the thinnest strokes.

Vary leading - rhythm
  • Leading is space between lines of text. It can create a very consistent rhythm on the page.

  • You can turn type 90 degrees on the page for interesting effect, or interweave the lines of type from various angles.

  • Varying the leading of a selection of text copy sets up a visual rhythm on the page as lines produces white areas between them.

  • Varying 'leading' is not appropriate in all setting of text, but for clients who seek attention, then it might be an interesting approach.

Vary leading - white space
  • It can be used dramatically to call attention.

  • Its important to place such phrases very carefully, paying attention to the edges of the page and the tension that is created between the type and the edge.

  • This must also be given when type is placed in relation to the edges of images.

replacing letter with an image
  • This can be effective because it combines type and image into one element.

  • In order to be successful in transposing an image into design, ascertain that the image and the letter are roughly in the same shape.

  • The replacement works best when weights of the characters and image coordinated.
