Design Considerations

  • It is the sense of what are attractive and appealing elements that need to be put together and stress in that design.

Proportion

  • The size of one thing compared to the size of another thing.

Contrast

  • In publication each document is important and needs one dominant element.

  • It can be the headline, photo, white space that may focus the eye's attention. 

  • Contrast keeps the reader's eye focused on the next. 

Design Guidelines

  • Basic design principles can work, against effective publication :-

    • Don't be afraid of white space; it's a legitimate design element.​

    • Avoid irregularly shaped blocks of text.

    • Use only one or two typeface on a single page.

    • Use lowercase letter wherever possible.

    • Use discretion when underlining-underline copy is hand to read.

    • Avoid capitalizing every word in headline.

    • Align headlines left or right or centered.

    • Use angled type only in short banners.

    • Avoid unequal spacing between the elements in publication.

    • Make a proofreading before print the final copy.

Principles of Good Design

  • Each publication is different and can be appeal to the reader on an individual basis.

  • A design must attach only to the primary aims - to produce a unique, attractive publication that easy to read.

Balance

  • Balance items have equal weight on equal sides.

  • Unbalanced objects make uneasy and balanced objects make it feel secure.

Unity

  • Unity is a recognizable pattern for some of the common elements.

  • Maintaining an internal consistency within each document is desirable.

Tools for Effective Design

  • This tool is used to create a well design documents.

White Space

  • White space is a blank space with no text, or illustration.

  • It provides contrast and improves readibility.

Type Styles

  • Type styles are normal typefaces, modified to add contrast or emphasis.

  • It will make the letters and words stand out.

  • Italic is use to added emphasis to the text and captions.

Bleeds

  • Bleeds are areas of text or graphics that extend past the edges of a page.

  • Most bleeds are created by trimming the paper after the pages are printed.

Drop Shadow

  • A drop shadows is a shaded repetition of a shape that shaded in black, grey, another color or shaded pattern.

  • When place slightly to the side and behind the original shape, it looks like a shadow.

Reverses

  • Reverses, white type set against a black background are a good emphasis tool for short sentences set in large.

Color

  • Brightly colored paper and background are always the safest choices.

  • Use a second color sparingly on borders, rules, subheads or masthead.

  • Choose a color that creates a pleasing contrast to primary  color.

Boxes

  • Boxes add importance to the text or images they surround.​

Photo Cropping

  • Eliminate unimportant details and emphasize important ones by cropping the images.

  • In most instances the original shape will be retained but the trimmed version will focus attention more directly on the remaining elements.
